The staff is really friendly and the portion of the foods are HUGE. I love the chicken salad or tuna salad, they're SOOO good! The only down side is that it is pretty small so sometimes you don't really have anywhere to sit. I usually order to-go anyways.

I've had many Cubans here in the Bay Area, to the point where I personally try and seek out who had the best. I'd have to say this place carries one of the best Cuban sandwich in St. Pete. Buy the foot and you'll find yourself getting the best bang for your 5 bucks. One instance I requested them to add salami onto my Cuban but they sure don't skimp out on the meat either way. The service here is also very quick. You order at a register and then you're out in less than 5 minutes. The only draw back is the interior of the place. Not much seating and isn't inviting enough for me to actually eat there. Other than that, I have no complaints. Great selection of sandwiches but the Cuban here rules over all

What a Fantastically affordable and high quality deli! The guys here are super kind and if you don't know what you want, they are sweet enough to help you navigate through their impressive menu options! The breads are ridiculously fresh! and they don't slice the cheese and meats so thinly that you could see through it like those chain sub places. The reason I won't give it a 5 is that they really need another vegetarian option. There's only one. If you get it, I would suggest getting the sauce on the side bc they are really heavy-handed with it. I will definitely return, but I will try to make my own.

I wanted to like this place as much as the others I found while I was in St. Petersburg, but that wasn't exactly the case. This place wasn't fantastic, wasn't terrible. The people seemed friendly enough, but there were a few things with them I found odd. Like what? Well, the gal who took our order had blonde and blue hair and tons of piercings everywhere. I wasn't freaked out, just odd to see that on a server in a restaurant. Made me wonder a bit, you see that more in tree hugger type crunchy restaurants. She left to pick up her daughter, who was about 10 years old I would guess, and they returned and sat with the owner watching a really loud, vulgar and offensive episode of South Park,... I guess, which episodes aren't? I have nothing against the show, but letting a 10-year-old watch it and laughing like crazy as they drop all kinds of inappropriate language for kids, thought that was strange. Not exactly the kind of show you see on in a restaurant either. The atmosphere is a bit dirty and seems unfinished. Lots of stuff written on dry erase boards and stuff stacked around. Another employee kept using an electric slicer that clearly had something wrong with it because it was making a grinding sound in this small shop that would have woke the dead. Tables were a bit dirty and sticky. I like the "hole in the wall" feel, so this wasn't too terrible. Ordered the Cuban sandwich that the gal with the daughter said was "the best in town" and that some local radio DJ came in for regularly. It really wasn't that great. It was okay, tasted good, kind of bland and plain. Prices were okay. This place is definitely a one man show, the owner makes the sandwiches in the back and the unusual staff serves it up. If I were in Tampa again, I'd give this a 50/50 shot that I would try it again and would definitely try a different menu item. Overall, I'd say my experience was unremarkable.

The best Italian sub I have had outside of NY or NJ. I can't say the same for the soup but who cares? Huge and delicious!

I read so many positive reviews about this place, so I figured it would be worth trying. We ordered a cheesesteak and an italian hoagie. Sadly, neither sandwich was good. Maybe I had such high hopes due to the great ratings given, but neither myself or my husband enjoyed either meal. This place didnt cut if for me.

Not impressed. I went here on my lunch hour with a friend from the office. We ordered 2 salads and were told it would take about 15 minutes...we were still waiting almost 40 minutes later! Not to mention the waiting area was hotter than it was outside. Our salads were subpar. The lettuce was warm and there really was nothing to the salad. Very bland and boring. Maybe I would come here again to try a sandwich, but I would definitely call my order in ahead of time during the lunch rush!

What a great way to start off a trip. It was a pretty bad weather out so we stopped in for a quick meal. This was a perfect way to brighten a rainy day. We got a roast beef, Cuban, chicken and buffalo chicken sandwich. All fantastic and HUGE. It is not worth your time stopping by any fast food restaurant when you have this place so close by, very reasonably priced, pretty quick.

Second time at Big Stein's. First time, and I thought I wrote a review for it, but maybe not, I got their cuban sandwich, and I remember really enjoying it. This time, I went with one of their triple decker clubs - turkey, roast beef, bacon, and all the trimmings piled really really high on rye bread. I have to admit, I liked the cuban better. The club was good, but I guess I expected the bread to be toasted or something. Clubs aren't necessarily served hot or pressed, and I had no reason to expect it to be served hot or on toasted bread, but I did expect it and for that reason, I was a bit disappointed. Not enough to take any points away though - first, as I said, I had no reason to expect it, but second, there was so much deliciousness on here and it was so filling that it's impossible to not give Big Stein's a positive review. One of my favorite sandwich places in St. Pete. I don't come here often enough.

I had the Italian and it was average. The biggest issue is the lack of cleanliness. This place has years of dirt and wear everywhere you look. I believe it is owned and run by a husband and wife. What appeared to be their 10 year old daughter took my order. She was very sweet but not sure this is the best thing for business. Badly needs a good cleaning and some updating. I never understand restaurant owners who don't put any money into the restaurant to keep it clean and up to date. The food is not good enough to deal with the filth. The 3 star rating is for the average food the conditions would get a 2 on a good day.

I m visiting the area and found this on yelp. It's great! My tuna salad is fresh and green are fresh too! Def try sandwich next time!! Support local!!!!! They have great food!

We were visiting from Chicago and thanks to Yelp, found this terrific local deli. All 4 of us loved our choices and could only eat half our sandwiches, so had yummy leftovers for the next day. Wonderful service too!

Best Cuban in Town! I would give it 6 stars, but it ONLY allows 5...

This is a really cute mom and pop shop. The service was fast even though we overwhelmed them with a group of 10 people. The food was fresh and delicious. Perfect for a quick lunch.

there is limited seating, but I will stand and eat my sandwich (the pastrami is stellar) and do it with a smile. eat here. now.

Got the stein Cuban it was delicious! Very affordable, cheaper than publix and it's pressed not the fake thrown in a micro wave sub. Highly recommended for lunch crowd.

  • Liz M.

Hope you're hungry! They are NOT messing around with these sandwiches. It's almost silly... if it wasn't so good. My officemate and I easily shared one but when I got home that night, I almost regretted my generosity! Good quality meat, cheese, nice crunchy veggies, (likely, not sure) homemade bread. Friendly service, not a ton of seating but I'm sure 90% of their business is like me... local business that isn't planning to dine in anyway. And they have Dr. Brown's sodas... they would have got me back in the door based on that alone! Heck of an improvement over the Subway up the block, I promise you that! In fact, I think I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrow. Thinking the ridiculously low priced for the quality Italian. Yep. See you all around 12:30!

  • Rob H.

Been here twice now. Their Reuben is absolutely delicious, their Italian sub is a bit too spicy (I love spicy food but not for an Italian sub) and peppery. Turkey sandwich is delicious. The Italian was a little surprising as every other sandwich is way above average. This place is excellent!

  • Nikki A.

I have been going here for years. My favorite wrap is the Veggie, I also love the mile-high Monster Triple deckers. (Try the Empire State!) Small, friendly, shabby, and delicious.

    (4)
  • Mike D.

Not sure what they're known for, but it should definitely be the Cuban. Perfectly crusty break with think pieces of pork and ham. All this for like $6, crazy deal. I randomly stopped in here and so glad I did!

  • Justin R.

Why this place wasn't packed is beyond me. What an awesome Cuban! I wish I had a deli like this closer to my house because I would be here everyday for lunch. Great food, fast service, quality product.

I have been going to Big Stein's ever since it was on 62nd Avenue and 4th street! The quality of food is amazing, every singe thing i have had there was fabulous. But the quantity will get you every time, Mark loads those sandwiches and salads to the brim! They are always overflowing. The owner Mark is very friendly and really takes pride in the menu he offers. The deli its self is clean, and welcoming. I love everything about them.

  • Taylor M.

My brother lives nearby and absolutely loves this place! So naturally when I came to visit he insisted that I try out Big Steins. We went for lunch and split the Italian sandwich which was more than enough food. They even added peppercini to the sandwich for us free of charge. The sandwich was delicious. We also got two sides, the potato and pasta salad. Both were awesome. The staff was extremely friendly. While Big Steins does mostly carry out, there are a couple tables and high top seating.

  • Michael Z.

Big, hearty, delicious New York-style deli sandwiches that live up to their namesake. Bronx Bomber (pastrami, corned beef, and brisket) on rye is a must. Crowded for sure but well worth the wait.

    (4)
  • Nicholl B.

First time ever here and it was a huge awesome turkey sandwich! Not a huge fan of the potato salad but it was good.

    (4)
  • Prof J.

These sandwiches are massive! I had the corned beef and pastrami sandwich along with chips and drink. The food is good but it's not the best, plus it sorta took a while to get the order out to us. The place is small and there's no tvs. I wouldn't mind eating here again , but it ain't nothing I would "die " to eat .

  • John N.

This place has one of the best hot pressed Cuban sandwiches in the Tampa Bay area. Quality meat, large portions, and great prices! Well worth a try...

    (5)
  • Michael O.

Well I'm extremely disappointed, this place is messy, chaotic and the layout needs serious work. Crumbs all over the floors and tables. Dead insect in the restroom, awkward wilted food in glass coolers for the world to see. Only 3 tables and a bar in this whole place. Its beyond me why there were so many people there, maybe they know a menu item that i don't. I returned my Brooklyn blast that was tough and really had nothing special to it. Bread wasn't toasted or anything even though I ordered it hot. I got my refund but don't particularly care for the comments about how you have to order it with what you want. I don't think it should be that hard, you have a recipe with toppings, sauce, etc and if someone wants something different they ask to change it. Why are some menu items complete sandwiches and others not, seems silly. The Turkey ruben was good had sauce sauerkraut, etc, thats a sandwich that is acceptable. The ruben meat was much more tender and the sandwich bread toasted. The broccoli cheddar soup was gross, bland, flavorless, like thick water. There were burned pieces from the bottom of the soup crock in the soup. A Lot of room for improvement here. Come On yelpers I should have had a heads up on all of this before coming it makes no sense that some of you are rating 5 stars and others 2-3. Are your reviews paid for?

Stein? How was your chicken salad even better on this latest visit. I didn't think that was possible. Thank goodness Stein not only stays open until 6pm on Saturdays (I popped in around 535pm), but the man himself put together my salad of salads while keeping an eye on the Rays game and catching up with me on everything else going on. Oh, my salad was the delicious chicken salad and a huge portion of pasta salad on an actual salad of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions with a couple peppers thrown in there for good measure complimented by plenty of tangy sundried tomato dressing. I was insanely hungry, and almost ordered a half sandwich to go with it, but this particular salad was so jam packed with good stuff I did not need anything else. And, on my way out as his final customer of the week, Stein let me peel off the window sticker that a former FM sportsradio station asked him to display a couple years ago. The sticker was one of many pathetically bad attempts to connect with an audience and, only appropriate that I got to remove it. Why? Well, I have intimate knowledge of that mess of a station and some of the horrendous decisions made there both by New York management and a former Bucs defensive lineman who should never appear on any radio or TV show.

Ordered pretty close to closing time, they had the chairs up on the tables. I ordered the Philly cheese sandwich & my bride ordered a wrap. Got them pretty quick. They did put a couple of chairs off of a table for us. My wife's wrap was big & she said it was very good. But my philly cheese was good but lots of bread hardly any meat at all. The meat was very thin, on one end of the sandwich was 2" without any meat & the other end probably 3" without any meat. U can see the pic I took not much there. It had good flavor but not enough meat in it. The bread was dry without any meat. The Bathroom Was NOT Very clean. My wife would go back, but I wouldnt, so that means she isn't going back either because I usually do the driving.

Great place to come for lunch. Had no idea they delivered and I will definitely out that to good use. The food is always delicious and the staff are very nice. I love the Greek salad with chicken! I had the cuban which was one of my favorite Cubans I have had in this area. I go here every 2 weeks for lunch and love it!

I really want to like this place. It gets great reviews and I love supporting small businesses but something about this place just turns me off. I stopped in on a rainy day and noticed that they were busy. The interior is a little dark and there are boxes stacked when you walk in the door. You can see in the kitchen from the order counter. The sights back there did not increase my appetite. I could see bins of food in the prep area. I stayed and ordered a wrap because of all the rave reviews. The wrap I got was very good. Not the best but good. I wanted to go back and give it another try but my first experience turned me off so much. I convinced a co-worker to come with me for a second chance. We walked in, boxes still stacked in corner, whole place reeking of bleach. She looked at me and was ready to leave. That's it. Can't do it again. Sorry, Big Stein's, I tried.

Awesome vibe, friendly service and yummy sandwiches. My fiance tried the buffalo chicken sub which had quite a bit of kick, in a good way. I made my own half sandwich (which is still a full sandwich. I love that you can order there deli-meat to go too. I will absolutely be back.

We were looking for a tasty, local joint and we were very pleased. We had the Half sandwich specials and both LOVED the Cuban. If we lived here, this would be a regular spot for us.

Tried it for the first time today. Great sandwich, it was huge and only $5.99 -- a similar sandwich at Jersey Mikes would probably be $9. I really enjoyed the capicola, it had a really nice kick to it.

My coworkers have talked a lot about Big Stein's Deli. As a consummate sammich consumer, I was curious to finally try it and got the offer from someone who had been there only the day before. Going to a place two times in a row usually is a seller. And I'm always looking to try new places on 4th. Walk in and don't expect thrills - counter for ordering lunch, open deli cooler to order meat, ice cream case, a few drink cases, a few tables and some works in the back. The menu isn't huge but it doesn't need to be - plenty of great sounding triple decker club sandwiches, some big hoagies, salad options and some hot subs. All for pretty cheap. The Philly was advertised as the special, and had to get that (note to self: don't order a delicious philly on a boot camp day). The sandwich was long, on fresh bread and it was the type of philly with the cheese all melted and drips down your hands and face as you eat it - you know, the best kind. All 3 co-workers ate only half of their subs and took the rest back to the office. I eagerly await returning, ordering a cold sub, and maybe some deli meat.

So, i think this place is more of a 3.5. It's a great hole in the wall spot. The service was quick and friendly and the prices were great. I ordered the Brooklyn blast (or bomber) corned beef and pastrami on marble rye with mustard. It came out looking perfect but when I tried picking it up to eat it, the bread literally fell apart. The meats were ok, sliced well. I might go back and try something else on a sub roll. I'm dying for a great pastrami sandwich.

Best sandwich spot in st. Pete. Get the larry special. Its not on the menu but its the a philly made with the pork used for the famous cuban. You will not regret it.

Huge sandwich lunch for jaw dropping prices. This little whole in the wall has compassionate, laid back staff that help you understand your options. Got the vibe most people are regulars, and I understand why, but I still felt very welcome.

I recently began working in St. Petersburg and needed to find a good, local deli. After a search online, I was lucky to find Big Stein's. When I went in, I saw the "triple decker" sandwiches, and I was not sure what to expect. Then the plate showed up (see the picture I have added on here). This sandwich is absolutely wonderful. The meat is stacked high and the vegetables are great. Tomatoes are as red as the five stars above this review. The bread is fresh and this sandwich could serve two- although I always enjoy eating it all. It's a mom and pop type restaurant with an owner and two employees. Everyone Is very nice and helpful. I would put it up there with some of the best deli food I have had anywhere. I highly recommend the Skyscraper Club. Don't waste your time eating bread sandwiches with a slice of processed meat like Subway or Jimmy Johns. Visit Big Stein's Deli. This place is the real deal!

  • Jen N.

It's definitely a guy's kind of place, but I still love it. Big sandwiches with lots of meat, not much in the way of decorations, usually boxes of chips or other dry stock in the restaurant, usually watching whatever sport season it is. Tables are clean, but non-descript. The staff is very friendly. It does get busy in there, so if it's your first time, grab a printed menu and get out of the way until you figure it out. Otherwise, they stop being friendly. ;-) Seems like they know a lot of the customers that come in. You'll spot the regulars. Always a good sign of repeat business. Two things to try: the potato salad is so good! Very heavy, but worth it! Also, whatever sandwich you order, put a little of the habanero sauce on it. Life changing! Don't know where they get that stuff, but wow, is it good!

This place does not fuck around, not even for a second. The subs are delicious and big enough to feed a normal person twice easily. When it comes to a sub/sandwich shop Big Steins is the best for my money.

If you're in the Gateway/Gandy area for lunch, Big Stein's is a great choice! This independent business makes its way in an area filled with corporate sandwich chains. Subway, Jersey Mikes, and Firehouse Subs aren't far away from Big Stein's - not to mention the numerous fast food choices within a mile! I have been going here for about 5 years and they keep their prices low and food consistent. Big Stein's is known for their fresh ingredients and huge sandwiches. The triple deckers are literally enough to feed 2 or 3 people. I order a half custom sandwich on marble bread and they always give me a whole. This place does not skimp, that's for sure! Give them a try the next time you want a sandwich for lunch! They also deliver with a $10 minimum order.

This place looks shady when you walk in, but don't be fooled. It's amazing. Definitely the best cuban sandwich I've had in St. Pete. Also, the half cuban (which is practically a full cuban that I can't even eat all the way) is under $4! I've also had the california wrap and a "make your own" sandwich, both equally delicious and cheap. You can also buy deli meat here which I have yet to do but probably will in the future as it is just down the street from me.

  • Jonathan H.

Great sandwiches. Meats and cheeses were very high quality. Prices were very good and the sandwiches were huge. Location is a strip mall and place is not impressive inside, but food is great and staff were helpful and courteous.

Don't let the shabby interior fool you. Big Stein's delivers big sandwiches with big flavor. They passed my pastrami test on my fist visit. Flavorful and tender meat piled high on marble rye with Russian dressing. Perfection! Subsequent visits had us trying their NY-named offerings, and even though I hate the Yankees, the Bronx Bomber will have me coming back for more! Brisket, pastrami, and roast beef topped with a heap of Cole slaw. One sandwich is enough to feed three people, and I say this as someone with a healthy appetite. Smaller appetites will be sated with the half sandwich and soup option, or a regular sandwich. ( still big) In addition to fantastic sandwiches, you can order your meats by the pound for way, way cheaper than the grocery deli. We've had their capicola, turkey, and ham. All excellent. Soups were not bad, not great, but OK, but who really goes to a deli for soup anyway? Their store could use a little sprucing up and decorating, but other than that, this is a great choice when craving deli.

Last year my wife purchased a greek salad and claims it as the best in town! She thought that I should visit there and try their subs. I tried their Beast and instantly and officially became a 100% certified/ dedicated once a week patron. The Beast rocks and Big Stein's deserves SIX STARS!

Awesome sandwiches and subs. Everything about them is excellent, the meats, the bread...the tomatoes in particular- bright red, perfectly ripe, melt in your mouth tomatoes... Sometimes it's the little things that get you.

We just drove into town and took a chance on this place. Awesome sandwiches and great value for the money. The Italian sub was awesome with traditional meats, cheeses and condiments. My wife loved it as well. Will go back every chance I get!

HUGE sandwiches! Went in to try it out a little over a year ago and keep coming back. We crave this place and we are never disappointed! Our favorites are the Bronx Bomber and the Subway Series!

The food is great here. The best Cuban sandwich I have ever had. You just have to get past the way the place looks. It is in need of a complete renovation. Old, worn and grungy, but the sandwiches make it all worthwhile.

Big Stein's Deli is awesome. It's right on 4th Street and I always find myself craving something from there. I'm originally from NY, where we have the best delis. I'm not sure, but I think the owners might be from NY. And if they're not, they definitely understand the concept of what an NY deli should be. Plus, all their sandwiches have fun NYC-themed names. I brought a friend of mine from NY here when she came to visit and it definitely met her approval as well. There are a variety of sandwiches, wraps, soups, and salads on their menu. All delicious and all huge! Often, we'll get a sandwich, eat (maybe) half of it on the spot and save the rest for later. This especially applies to the Skyscraper Club, which is a monster. Any wrap or sandwich I have ever had from here has been great. I also happen to love their Broccoli and Cheddar soup. It's really really thick but creamy and cheesy and delicious. And their Greek salad is, of course, ginormous, but truly amazing with the option of having the potato salad right on top, which is a treat. The knishes were okay. It could be considered kind of pricey (compared to FL, not NY prices) but I would definitely say it's worth it.

I rarely write reviews, but our meal was so wonderful that I have to give proper recognition to Big Stein's Deli. Four people had three sandwiches, and the reports from all of us was that each sandwich was great. The half of the grilled pastrami reuben I had was plenty of food and was spectacular. Highly recommended!
